3 Lists To Take When You See Your Divorce Lawyer

Posted on: 8 February 2021

When you are getting a divorce, you want to make sure that you are getting everything you are entitled to and everything you will need to live after the divorce goes final. To ensure that you get everything you need, you need to have an attorney help you out. Before you go in and see your attorney for the first time, you should write up some lists that you can give to your attorney. So, what kinds of lists should you write up?

Current Assets

One list should be all the current assets that you are aware of. This includes jewelry, large furniture, houses, cars, bank accounts, and retirement accounts. If you had any of that before your marriage, then make sure that you mark that on the list. If you can show proof that you had all of that before your marriage, this would also be a good time to show that. The proof can be as simple as pictures that date back before your marriage or receipts that show when you purchased it.

Current Debts

You also want to make sure that you list all of your current debts. That includes mortgages, car loans, credit card bills, medical bills, and other similar things. Debts are something else that will need to be split up between you and your former spouse. If you brought any of the debts into the marriage or you or your spouse is solely responsible for one particular debt, make sure that you tell your attorney that. It's something that they are going to need to be aware of.

Child Custody

If you have a child, then you are going to have to deal with custody and visitation. You need to make up a list for your attorney about what you would like to see regarding custody and visitation for your child. Your list should also have information about child support. If you have any concerns about your child's safety and wellbeing, if they were to be around your former spouse for any kind of visitation or custodial period, this would be the time to make your lawyer aware of your concerns.

If you are getting a divorce, even if it's the one that you wanted, it can be a difficult period for you. Hiring a divorce lawyer can help you with that. Making out some lists to take with you when you go see your attorney can help you lay out your case
